Recently
the University of Colorado released some tips to avoid being raped. You’ve
probably heard about this, but I was so pissed off by it that I had to cover
it.
The
university, which does not allow “weapons” like pocket knives, guns, any kind
of metal knuckles oh and sling shots, suggests that women react passively to
attackers and of course try to run away. Obviously if you can get away and run
that’s the best bet. However, the most appalling suggestion made in this list
was that a girl tell the attacker she has a disease or is on her period. Right, because that’s going to stop a sick
nutjob? And seriously tell him you have a disease? If some dude has just
grabbed me and is intent on raping me I doubt my first reaction is going to be
to yell “I am on my period!” or “I have the herp!!” Come on people.
I
think worse and more degrading than suggesting women say they are on their
period to avoid rape is the suggestion to vomit or urinate on an attacker.
I
don’t know about you but I can’t just vomit or pee on command. I am a woman not
an animal capable of defecating myself when I am scared. Do these people really
think that we can just vomit on cue? Unless I’ve been chomping down sweets and
then decide to run a marathon before getting cornered by a rapist, I doubt I am
gonna be able to vomit on him.
What
gets me about this shit(and excuse my use of expletives but I am just so
disgusted by this whole thing) is that there is always this push for
empowerment and independence for women in our world today I’d really like to
know how those tips factor into empowerment.
Why
don’t we teach women how to actually protect themselves? Teach them how to fend
off an attacker with basic skills and even with *gasp* guns. I think the
likelihood of a potential rapist running off scared from me pulling out a
handgun is greater than him running off when I scream I am on my period while
stimulatingly trying to piss myself and vomit.
I
dunno, what makes you feel safer girls?
Vomit
or a bullet and some hand to hand defense training?
After
some serious backlash the university did remove their “tips” and replaced it
with this http://www.uccs.edu/pusafety/what-to-do-if-you-are-attacked-.html
and apologized, but not specifically for suggesting we piss ourselves on
command to avoid rape.
